I learned (and now yearn) the importance of third spaces while living in Vietnam, everything and everywhere seemed so community driven, there was an impeccable sense that wherever you went you were welcome. A quick cup of trá dá (iced tea) drip coffee or beer was always available even in the most remote areas, and always with curious and happy smiles. Living in a big city has really made me miss living there and feeling welcome.
I definitely miss a lot that feeling of being welcomed since Vancouver is definitely not a super friendly city. It takes time to find your network of people and a community that you feel comfortable with but after three years here I can say that I finally found. Those first years were very rough though and third spaces did help immensely to not feel as lonely. Thank you so much fot reading Pris, appreciate your support always🩷
Love your point about social media skewing what community is - I think a lot of people, young people especially, actually don't have a good sense of what real community is. I'm heartened by the amount of people turning to real, 'in-real-life' communities, like yourself, and it makes me think about ways I can follow suite.
Bathhouses in Japan are truly the best! They’re not free or perfect but I do really feel like breweries serve as a third space in the American Midwest (among many other brewery-centric places) On the weekend days they’ll be full of family gatherings, groups of friends play cards, or casual parties for any occasion. It’s such a place for lingering and running into people you know.
This was such a warming piece to read on this cold, February Sunday. Feeling disconnected from my people when living on one side of London with my friends/boyfriend an hour across the city felt isolating - but pockets of community I found in my local coffee shops/the flower stand really nourished my soul. This piece has pushed me to do something about deliberately and intentionally contributing to these third spaces <3
public libraries ftw!!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
the market hall reminds me of london’s borough market, which I got to see last summer! I think about it ALL the time
I searched for it online and seems lovely!
