In this newsletter: The easiest tiramisu recipe to make for yourself or a loved one, ways to show your love without spending a lot of money, my favorite movies to watch and feel things.
‘The search for love continues even in the face of great odds’
— Bell Hooks, all about love
I’ve always been a romantic. As soon as I learned how to write, I would make my mom letters, full of stickers and glitter, telling her how much I loved her. She still keeps most of them at home and sometimes reads when she misses me. When I had my first boyfriend, I broke up with him on February 13th because I didn’t want to spend Valentine’s Day with someone ‘I really didn’t love’.
Lately, I have been thinking even more about love since our good friends are getting married this Spring. As someone who loves love, this is the best news of my year so far and I can’t wait to witness this next chapter of their lives. This weekend we found the dress my friend will be wearing at her ceremony. I can’t believe how perfect the dress looks on her.
How to show your love and appreciation for someone on Valentine’s Day (or every day).
Send them a handwritten letter in the mail. Snail mail is back baby!
Take over a chore they hate doing or help them with paperwork.
Bake their favorite dessert, like some Tiramisu, using the recipe below!
Take the lead in organizing a special date
Schedule a FaceTime date and catch up
Print a photo of the two of you and frame it
Draw or paint something for them and frame it
Send them a voice note telling them how much you appreciate them
Make them a playlist
Create a list of book recommendations you think they will love to read
Showing your appreciation for someone goes beyond spending money on material things. The best gift in life is knowing somebody cares so much about you that they are willing to share the most precious resource of all: time.
For some reason, I had the impression that making Tiramisu would be very difficult. Luckily, I was wrong, and browsing through an Italian cookbook at my friend’s house I found this four-step tiramisu recipe. I sourced all the ingredients at my local grocery store and started working on it with this playlist in the background.
What to watch to feel fuzzy feelings
Lost in translation
The whole movie is a treat for the eye and one of my favorite films about love. It is not your conventional love story, but rather a real representation of how sometimes people can cross your path so briefly and still change your world forever. My favorite scene is when Bob and Charlotte hug for the last time in the middle of a busy street in Tokyo as he leaves. The final line of the movie kills me every time.
“I have to be leaving, but I won't let that come between us”.
Anora
One of my favorite movies from last year! Again, not a traditional Valentine’s Day movie, with a lot of raw scenes and depictions of violence — Anora will make you cry, laugh and essentially keep you on your toes the entire movie. I also really fell in love with Mikey Madison and her performance and can’t wait to see what she does next.
Past Lives
I only have one regret: not seeing this movie on the big screen. I loved every minute of this film. It made me cry, feel sad and frustrated at times, but it mostly got me thinking a lot about the soul mates we meet in life. These people that we cross paths with and mean so much, and we never forget, even if we are not meant to be with each other. Do yourself a favor and watch it.
Y tu mamá también
This love triangle story starred by Ana Mercado, and real-life besties Gael Garcia and Diego Luna, is exactly what you need if you are in search of a fun, messy, and very spicy story. The film shares the story of two best friends, Tenoch and Julio, who embark on a road trip with their cousin’s wife, Luisa, after she finds out he is cheating on her. Hungry for revenge, Luisa decides to accept the invitation of Tenoch and Julio and go on a trip with them through South Mexico, searching for a hidden beach on the coast of Oaxaca. The photography, the script, the locations here — truly a 10/10.
